The Sunny John Junior at CRMPI
The original prototype of the Sunny John was built and designed for a flat land location. This model is designed for sites with east, west or north sloping land. The barrel vault is accessed from ground level, a few feet below the door level. The design is cheaper to build - a footprint approximately half that of the original means less concrete and is easier to manage - the barrel vault isn't down in the ground. This model was prototyped at the
Colorado Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute (CRMPI) in Basalt, Colorado. Constructed as a workshop project entirely of recycled materials (except for the wind turbine), it cost CRMPI only $150! The Plans Package, available
here, includes construction drawings for this model as well as the original flat land prototype.
