The Original Sunny John Circa 1993
The whole idea in prototyping the Sunny John was to create an outdoor odor free toilet to service a new CSA farm with no existing public facilities.
As such, we succeeded in spades! Not only is it odor free, but this turned out to be the first outhouse anyone had seen that is also warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.
I had to create a free-standing separate building, with everything it needed to stand on its own for shelter, heat and venting. The
problem becomes much more simpler for a design incorporated in a building.
Several folks are doing this now - the venting that keeps it odor free and the vault arrangement would be the only essential elements
to include as part of a home integrated Sunny John design. All
the Sunny John's I build have light clay walls. Check this
site out for more info on light clay construction.
