With the roof finally on, the bales are plastered. We used the sifted subsoil from the excavation for creating a clay slurry, to which we added a large percentage of hammer milled straw. When the ratio was right, the "plaster" dried crack free on the bale walls. Built up by hand to over an 1 1/2" depth, the plaster protects and fireproofs the walls inside and out. The cavity opening to the right in the photo has been reserved for a future wood fired brick oven.
