The idea here is to produce a large light clay block to be used for building walls. Typically, light clay walls are a natural materials wall system. It consists of a timber frame infilled with clay coated straw. The infilling is done in place with temporarily installed forms. The result is designed to be a monolithic skin of compacted clay covered straw enveloping the framing. This approach I've been developing would eliminate the need for forming. Instead the infilling would be done with blocks mortared in place between the framing members. The idea would be to eliminate the need for forms and allow for an open production schedule - making blocks when the time is available rather than one very large project of forming, material preparation and stuffing happening all at once. Also, the idea of a modular block allows for some creative experimenting with arches and curved walls - not easily done if forming is required.
